House L

Myrina (Amygdalies), Limnos, Greece / 2002

A modest dwelling is sited on a terraced plot of land on a small Aegean island. The house is fitted to topographical demands and is formed of simple interrelated volumes. Generous apertures absorb and connect with the immediate and distant surroundings of house, property, town, hills, sea, sunset and horizon line. The plan considers flexible open – ended spaces which though designated for specific use remain non – descript resisting prescribed notions of purpose, function and manner. Incisions on the ground, (sunken courtyards), encourage solace and retreat from the everpresent surroundings. These cavities, a byproduct of unearthing for the preparation of foundations, are preserved and advanced to exploit and articulate exterior zones. Accordingly they prolong interior spaces to the outside thus expanding the notion of fixed boundary and containment. Regional materials and technology are considered throughout.
